Services for Celeste (Thomas)Henley, 81, of Brownfield will be at 10am, Monday, January 9, 2012 at First Christian Church with Rev. Ken Reeder and her son-in-law, Larry Meurer officiating. Burial will be in the Ropesville Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-6pm.
Celeste passed away Friday, January 6, 2012 in a Lubbock Hospital. She was born March 4, 1930 in Hamlin to Troy and Irene (Dean) Morris. She was the youngest of five children. Celeste operated the Ropes Plainsman from 1961 until 1969 and in 1969 she went to work as society editor for the Brownfield News for the next seven years. She left The Brownfield News to join the staff of the Avalanche-Journal as TV editor until her retirement eight years later. After retirement she helped out at the radio station in Brownfield. She received a teaching certificate in music from Texas Tech University and taught piano for seven years. Later she studied psychology and business management at South Plains College. She was preceded in death by her parents; twin brothers, Ronald and Donald Morris; a granddaughter, Jarene Cox; a great-great grandson, Braxton Weidner.
Celeste is survived by her husband, Dewey of Brownfield; two daughters, Berrilyn and Larry Meurer of Ropesville and Irene and Mike Cox of Lubbock; a son, Artie and Ruth Thomas of Lubbock; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; 3 step-daughters, Peggy Allen, Chris and Gary Blair and Judy and Lawrence Brewer all of Lubbock; 3 step-sons, Gary and Terri Henley of Lubbock, Dan Henley of Wolfforth and Cal Wayne and Pat Henley of Big Spring; 20 step-grandchildren and 26 step-great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lola Whitfield and Lela Shanklin both of Lubbock.
