Graveside Service for Gerrel Wayne Stokes, 93, of Brownfield, will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Terry County Memorial Cemetery, with Chaplain Josh McLemore and Pastor Tommy Rosenblad officiating.

Wayne was born on January 14, 1932, to Arthur Roosevelt Stokes and Vivian Isabella McKenzie Stokes in Genoa, AR. He was the middle child of seven.

He attended school in Texarkana, AR. Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, mainly at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, NM. He returned to Texarkana and completed a bookkeeping and accounting course at FOUR CO Business College in Texarkana, TX. Wayne was in route sales for most of his career, including Coca-Cola and Tom’s Peanuts, retiring in 2000. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Brownfield, TX, and was faithful to his Lord. Wayne was a happy person and always had a twinkle in his eye. He loved his family and friends.

Wayne married Dorothy Hawthorne Buckley in Texarkana, AR, in 1953. With this union, he inherited a son, and they followed with five children. She passed away in September 1999. Wayne moved to Seminole, TX, to be close to a son, and there he met Carol Ann Cornett. They married on December 27, 2004, making their home in Brownfield, TX. He had part-time jobs at Texas Boll Weevil and United Super Market in Brownfield.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Vivian Stokes; 2 sons, Tommy Wayne Stokes and Steve Buckley; 2 brothers, Allan Stokes and Arthur Stokes; 3 sisters, Dorothy Martin, Barbara Young, and Patsy Austin; stepson, Stephen Matthew Cornett; step-daughter, Dana Michele Green.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Stokes; daughter, Brenda Stokes Ware; 3 sons, Rodney Stokes and wife, Mary, Keith Stokes, and Mike Stokes and wife, Sherri; 2 daughters-in-law, Gail Stokes and Liz Buckley; step-son, Doug Cornett and wife, Lynette; sister, Louise Bufford; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Chebib, as well as the staff of Interim Hospice, for the care they gave Wayne.
