Gertrude Mae (Roy) Oglesby, beloved wife and mother, went to be with her Lord on December 20, 2009 at the age of 87. Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Tuesday December 22, 2009 at Brownfield Church of Christ with Gregg Knight of Pottsboro Church of Christ in Pottsboro and formerly of Kirbyville Church of Christ in Kirbyville officiating. Bob Reynolds of Brownfield Church of Christ will be assisting. Services will be under the direction of the Brownfield Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 2 pm, Thursday, December 24, 2009 at Kirbyville Cemetery under the direction of E.E. Stringer Funeral Home.
Gertrude was born May 5, 1922 in Port Arthur, Texas in Jefferson County. She is the fourth child of William Otis and Irene (Denman) Roy. She graduated from Kirbyville High School in Kirbyville, Texas and Abilene Christian College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1944. Abilene is where she met and married Chester Lee Oglesby on May 1, 1943. She also graduated from West Texas University at Canyon with a Masters Degree in 1949. In 1950, she and Chester adopted their daughter Jimmie Ellen. Gertrude taught school for the Borger Ind. School District for 27 years before retiring. She and Chester returned to Kirbyville to take care of her elderly parents.
Gertrude and Chester were active members of the Kirbyville Church of Christ were Chester was a Deacon. After Chester’s death, she returned to Brownfield to live with her sister Virginia Burnett. Gertrude was a active member of the Brownfield Church of Christ. She was an avid participant in the “World Bible School” Program. She and her sister, Virginia, have over 32,000 students and financially supported many missionaries in Africa. Because of her dedication and support, many lives have been changed and many souls know and belong to the Lord.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her loving husband, Chester of 54 years, her daughter Jimmie Ellen, her parents William Otis and Irene Roy and her brothers, William Cleburne Roy and Phillip Milvard Roy. Those left to cherish her memory include her sister Virginia Burnett and husband James of Brownfield; nephews, Horace and his wife Roxanne, of Amarillo, Gary and his wife Sandy of Kingwood, Don Roy and wife Norma Jean of Silsbee, Pete Roy of Beaumont, Bo Roy and wife Alice of Lumberton and Walter Cobb and wife Gayle of Katy; nieces, Judy Edgar and husband Bill of Brownfield and Gailda Haney of Pasadena; a number of great and great-great nieces and nephews; host of family and friends.
Gertrude will be greatly missed, but we have peace knowing that she is at home with her Lord and Master and hearing what she wanted most, “Well done Thy good and faithful servant…”
