Irene was born on March 26, 1942, in Brownfield, to Robert Lee and Leola Pearl Petty. She passed away on April 11, 2024, at the age of 82.
Irene was a devoted wife to her late husband, George Lee Kirby, with whom she shared 27 loving years until his passing in 1989. She was a dedicated employee at GTE for three decades before retiring, leaving a lasting impact on her colleagues and community. Irene was a woman of faith who found solace in the pages of her beloved Bible, and she shared her love for the Lord with those around her.
In her leisure time, Irene enjoyed the outdoors through camping, immersed herself in reading, and shared joyful moments playing games like SkipBo with her family. She never missed a day of watching her favorite game show, "Wheel Of Fortune." Irene will be remembered as a beacon of love and compassion, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a comforting embrace to those in need.
Irene's legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren. She was affectionately known as "Gramma" to not only her grandchildren but also to many others whom she unofficially adopted as her own. Her warm presence and nurturing spirit will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee and Leola Pearl Petty, and her husband, George Lee Kirby. She is survived by a daughter, Serena Hagan of Brownfield; 3 sons, Robert Kirby of Brownfield, Gary Kirby (Portia) of Kingsland, and Curtis Kirby of Marble Falls; a brother, R.Lee Petty (Mildred) of Adrian; 2 sisters, Lola Harris (Joe) of Sandy, UT, and Ruth Jones (Glynn) of Lubbock; 10 grandchildren, Brian, Taryn, Keista, Carissa, Amber, Kaleb, Christian, Bethani, Brandon, and Brynna; and 17 great-grandchildren.
