Memorial service for Katie Joann Webb Cargill will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Calvary Baptist Church, 402 W. Broadway, Brownfield, TX with Randy Land officiating.

Visitation will be held at Brownfield Funeral Home from 6-8pm on Friday, February 21, 2014.

Katie Joann, 77, also known as “Nanny”, of Brownfield, entered into the arms of her Heavenly Father, Wednesday, February 19, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 13, 1936 in Amarillo, Texas to Kate Estelle Meador Webb and William Dell Webb. She was the Youngest of 9
children.

She lived all of her school years in Seminole, Texas and graduated from Seminole High School in 1954. Katie Joann attended West Texas A&M (known then as West Texas State) where she was head twirler for the Buffalo Band. She and Jackie Cargill were sweethearts since 4th grade and married on August 31, 1957 at First Presbyterian Church in Seminole and were happily married for 57 years. They lived in Lovington, N.M., Kermit and Seminole before moving to Brownfield in 1959. She was active member of the First Baptist Brownfield where she sang in the Adult choir and played Hand Bells. She previously was a Sunday school teacher, Pre-School coordinator, Pre. K and Grade2 S.S pianist for many years; children’s choir director, mission friend’s (Sunbeams) worker and member of Women’s trio and ensemble; member of Baptist Women’s Group and Mission Bible School Worker, and served on numerous committees in the First Baptist Church.

Katie Joann owned and operated “the Little Red Schoolhouse”- Parkside Kindergarten for 14 years. She sold the kindergarten to return to college to complete her college education. Jackie encouraged her to return to college after a brush with life-threatening form of cancer. He thought it was very important for her to be able to do that.

She graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and education with Kindergarten endorsement. She was immediately hired by Brownfield I.S.D. and taught K and then 1st grade Reading and Gifted and Talented. She retired having taught in BISD for 18 years. 32 total years were spent sharing her special gifts as a loving teacher.

She drew on her musical background to teach her students. She always wanted to make listening and remembering more pleasant and would often sing the class instructions or pay certain tunes on the piano which meant it was time to change activities. She loved her students dearly and next wanted the music to stop!

While teaching, she received the distinguished Muldrow Award from Brownfield ISD: Outstanding Teacher from Colonial Heights and educator of the Month. She was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association and Gifted and Talented and Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher’s Association.

Over the years she was nominated for outstanding Young Women of America, member of Caprock Girl Scout council, Junior Women Study Club, Young Homemakers Club, and the Optimist Club. Katie Joann was always active with her children as a Cub Scout Leader, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, PTA and Brownfield High School Tennis mom! She volunteered for March of Dimes, Heart Drive, Multiple Sclerosis, Terry County Co-Omega Study Club and Retired Teachers Association.

She has a past that was rich in memories, the opportunity to spend her days as a teacher who made a difference in the lives of many. Her heart’s desire was to show her kids and grandkids the joy of HOW to live and How to die. Joann said that “by calling us home, God is doing what any father would do. He is providing a better place to rest. A place he has prepared for us.”

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of more than 57 years, Jackie; children Teresa Dyson of Pampa, Rick Cargill of Lubbock: sister-in-law Jean Webb of Wolfforth; grandchildren, Ashley and husband Aaron Waldrip of Brownfield, Tanner Dyson of Lubbock, Hunter Cargill, Sayre Cargill, Raiter Cargill of Lubbock; great grandchildren, Elli, Maddox and Myla Mae Waldrip of Brownfield.
