Velma Kathleen Weiss, 88, of Brownfield passed away on Friday, May 14, 2010 in Lubbock. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ruby Moultrie officiating. Burial will follow at City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home. The family will have a visitation prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.
Kathleen was born on September 13, 1921 in Greenville, TX to William Taylor and Velma Kathleen Webb. She graduated from high school in Lamesa, TX. She then attended Texas Tech University, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech. Kathleen married George William Weiss on August 31, 1941 in Lamesa. Together they moved to Brownfield in 1949. She taught English in Brownfield schools for over 35 years. Kathleen was a member of the Terry County Heritage Museum Association, the Terry County Historical Commission, the last surviving Charter Member of the American Association of University Women; that she helped to establish in Brownfield in 1953, also serving many terms as president and a member of First United Methodist Church. Kathleen was an avid member of the Democratic Party. She was named Terry County Citizen of the year in 1999.
Kathleen is survived by her daughter, Jane McSpadden and her husband John of Lookout Mountain, TN; grandson, George Matthew Brock and his wife Nicki of Chattanooga, TN; granddaughter, Kathleen Brock of Chattanooga, TN; a great granddaughter, Charlotte Brock of Chattanooga; a nephew, Mike Weiss of Lubbock; her nephew, George Howell and 2 nieces, Anne McElroy and Lee Howell, all of Richmond, VA and her sister, Billie Grace Howell of Richmond, VA. The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church in Brownfield.
