Leota Hinson, 94, passed away at her home in Brownfield on Wednesday June 1, 2011. Services will be at 3pm, Friday, June 3, 2011 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Durham officiating.
Leota Hinson was born January 10, 1917 to E.V. and Imo (Johnson) Riley in Haskell. She married Mancil Hinson on January 22, 1934. They moved to Terry County in 1942.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for 36 years. Leota worked with the Youth, coordinating Vacation Bible School Missions trips to New Mexico and Colorado. She started the mission activities: quilting, clothes closet, shut-in visitation and local Bible Schools at Greater New Hope and Primera Iglesia Bautista churches.
Her favorite mission activity was the organization of the International Students Club at South Plains College. Her home was always open to the students so that they could have a home away from home. Holidays were a special event for the students.
Leota organized the XYZ Club for senior adults. It provided hot meals, recreation, crafts, all of this with only local financing. She was always involved in her son’s school life, attending every sports event. She had the first Junior High Athletics Banquet in her home and was one of the committee members who started Project Graduation. Leota was also a vital and active member of both the Brownfield and Lubbock Porcelain Art Clubs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mancil; two sons, Adrian and Leon Hinson; two brothers Vaughn and Velton Riley.
She is survived by a brother, J.V. Riley; a sister, Freddie Tatum; granddaughters, Adria Ann Crotwell and husband Wayne, Jeanine Durham, Sue Hinson, Tresa Coffman and husband Marlon and Jill Parkinson; four great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Betty Hinson; several nieces and nephews.
