Margene Fry Bryant, 82, of Brownfield passed away Monday evening, December 27, 2010, at Bender Terrace Care Center in Lubbock, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Services will be held Thursday morning, December 30, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Brownfield, Texas with Dr. Carl Moman and former Pastor Kenneth Flowers officiating. Burial will follow at Terry County Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.
Margene Fry Bryant was born January 7, 1928, in Lubbock, Texas, to Floyd and Lorena Fry. She graduated from Lubbock High School in 1946 and from Texas Tech University in 1949 with degrees in English and Journalism. She taught public schools for 23 years in the Whitharrel, Levelland, and Brownfield school districts, retiring in 1988. In retirement, she wrote short stories and poems for Highland and other Christian publications. She had a love for Christian missions local and around the world and shared her faith with all she encountered.
Margene married Gilbert L. Bryant on August 11, 1950. They lived in the Whitharrel, Levelland, and Brownfield communities where they raised five children and were actively involved in the following churches: Fifth Street and College Avenue Baptist Churches in Levelland and Sage Terrace Missionary Baptist and First Baptist Church in Brownfield. Margene taught Sunday school, loved singing in the church choir, and led in Baptist mission training and work. She loved her association with the Baptist Women Missionary Association, Meals on Wheels, and the Brownfield Community Literacy Program. Gilbert and Margene were faithful to and supported Gideon's International, Michael Gott Ministries, and Christian Ministries around the world.
Margene is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Lorena Fry, her father-in-law R.H. "Buck" Bryant , her husband Gilbert L. Bryant, and her brother-in-law Calvin Bryant.
She is survived by her mother-in-law, Edith Bryant of Levelland; her children, Brenda and Dave Clark of Los Alamos, N.M.; Glenda Bryant of Lubbock; Jimmy and Jenny Bryant of Olathe, Kan.; Jeff and Sheri Bryant of Hobbs, N.M.; and Jay and Lanie Bryant of Brownfield. She was blessed with ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; Amy and husband Jay Collins and their son Jaydon of Hobbs, N.M.; Haley Clark of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Deborah Bryant and her children Elizabeth and Nathan of Olathe, Kan.; Adam and Melissa Bryant of Hobbs, N.M.; Jarrod Bryant of Lubbock, Carley Clark of Denver, Colo.; James Bryant of Bartlesville, Okla.; Michael Bryant of Olathe, Kan.; and Corey Clark and Chesney Clark of Los Alamos, N.M.
She is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Ralph and Hortencia Bryant of Laredo, Ronnie and Sydna Bryant of Kingsland, Butch and Judy Bryant of Levelland, Dan and Mildred Throckmorton of Pagosa Springs, Colo., Eddie and Linda Holt of Midland, and Helen Bryant of Midland.
The Women On Mission Organization of First Baptist Church of Brownfield will serve as honorary pallbearers at the service. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Memorials in her honor may be given to the Gideon International Organization or the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering through the First Baptist Church of Brownfield.
