Maurine “Granny Rene” Smith, 97, of Plains passed away on Monday, April 5, 2010 at her home. Services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Hillside Church of Christ in Plains with David Boyles officiating. Interment will follow at Terry County Memorial Cemetery in Brownfield under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.
The family will have a visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m.
Maurine was born on August 24, 1912 in Chillicothe, Texas, to Royl and Willie May Saunders. She attended schools in Hackberry, Southland and Slaton and eventually graduated from Ropes High School. She married Idris Lee “I.L.” Smith on January 30, 1937 in Meadow. Together they moved from California to Tokio in 1948 where they farmed. They then moved to Plains in 1962. He preceded her in death on December 15, 1988. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Wendell, Ed, Doyle Saunders and her sister, Joann Henley. Maurine was a member of the Extension Club for 76 years and was recently honored as the "Oldest Member" and a 4-H leader. She was also a member of Hillside Church of Christ.
Maurine is survived by 2 daughters, Saundra Lee “Sonnie” Stephens and husband Rowe of Plains and Patsy Gayle Curtis and husband John Dale of Tokio; 7 grandchildren, Jimmy Curtis, Claudia Weaver, Johnny Curtis, Bill Curtis, Brent Stephens, Lee Ann Wood and Cristi Stephens; 24 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; her sister, Joyce Biggs of Lubbock and a very special caretaker, Candy Talamantes.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Portales Children’s Home in Portales, NM.
