Roma peacefully passed away on October 6, 2023, at the age of 80 after a rich and well-lived life. Her life was a tapestry of faith and grace.
Born in Frederick, Oklahoma on September 22, 1943, to L. E. and Marie Williams Laing, Roma's early years were marked by her parents' dedication during WWII. Her father enlisted, and her mother contributed to the war effort in Oklahoma City. Roma resided in Manitou, OK with her beloved "Daddow" and "Mama" on their farm during this period. When L. E. returned home, Roma embraced her role as a Preacher's Kid, experiencing life in various towns across Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. After graduating from Frederick High School in Oklahoma, she attended Oklahoma Baptist University for a couple of years, where she was a proud member of the Glee Club and relished walks in the rain and watching Spring tornados encircling Shawnee. She also held an interesting job working for the Brantly Helicopter Factory in Frederick during this time.
Her journey took her to southwestern Virginia, where she welcomed her two children, Gina Page Lummus and Travis Laing Page, into the world. Roma settled in Brownfield, TX, in 1974, where she single-handedly raised her children with the support of her parents and sisters. She played an active role in Immanuel Baptist Church, serving as a dedicated Sunday School teacher, choir member, church secretary, and contributing to her father's 29 years of pastoral service there. Eventually, she became co-owner of Brownfield Abstract and Title Company alongside Jim Pete Hale. She took immense pleasure from building abstracts, writing title policies, and working with local attorneys and realtors.
But her favorite and most loved role was that of grandmother to her grandsons, Kyler and Benjamin. She cherished every single second spent with them. To Roma, being their grandmother was not just a role; it was a source of immense joy and fulfillment.
Her greatest adventure was a trip in 2013 to visit her daughter's family in Israel. She was thrilled to see Jerusalem and the Sea of Galilee, but a blessing written in Hebrew for her by a rabbinical scholar at Masada held a special place in her heart. During the same journey, she marveled at the sights of Paris, including Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower, and savored the taste of pain au chocolate!
Roma was preceded in death by her parents L. E. and Marie, and her grandparents, Newman and Kate Thornton Williams (Daddow and Mama,) and Cassie Kersey Laing (Granny Cass,) and her aunt Emma Douglas Kersey (Auntie.)
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Michael Lummus of Fairfax, VA, her son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Latricia Page of Lubbock, TX, her grandsons Kyler Bryan Page of Hobbs, NM, and Benjamin Laing Lummus of Fairfax, VA; her sisters Theda Laing Decker and her husband Tommy, and Marta Laing Decker and her husband Danny, and 5 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to Goodwin House Hospice of Falls Church, VA, or to the charity of your choice.
