Ruth was born March 20, 1929 to Leslie Webster Thomas and Beulah Turner Thomas. The 4th of 12 children in Pie Town, NM at the foot of the Allegra Mountain. Like the rest of her brothers and sisters she was delivered by her dad. She was raised on a bean farm, which her dad had homesteaded.
Ruth met Raymond Clark Halsell while he was home on leave, they were married February 23, 1946. Where ever you go I will go was a way of life, as evidenced by the fact that Ray was born in Lufkin, TX. Roy was born in Magdalena, NM. Ruby was born in Tahoka, TX. Roxie was born in Springerville, AZ. Ronnie was born in El Paso, TX. Rita was born in Brownfield, TX. Ricky was born in Brownfield, TX. Finally, in 1971, Ruth found her permanent home at Brownfield were she lived for over 51 years.
Besides being a housewife she worked in the cotton fields both hoeing and pulling bolls, She eventually went to work at the school cafeteria. Later went to work at the Spud Nut shop where she worked for many years. At the same time she helped her sister Kitty with her lawn mowing business. At one time, they had 70 yards. Truly a hard working woman.
Ruth was a faithful servant of her Lord and Saviour Jesus, serving in the church nursery for 20 years and also as the ladies class secretary. She got to travel after she slowed down, visiting her son in Germany, her granddaughter in New Zealand. She managed to visit every state and at least 5 or 6 Canada Provinces.
She was preceded in death by one grandson Tony Richardson, one great-grandson Jakson, 3 brothers, 5 sisters, her father and mother, one daughter-in-law Donna Halsell, and one son-in-law Steve Smith.
Ruth is survived by 4 sons and 3 daughters, Ray of Sulphur, OK and Brownfield, Roy and Elsie of Leander, TX, Ruby Hand and Ed of Crowley, TX, Roxie Dangel of Marysville, WA, Ronnie and Lorraine of Killeen, TX, Rita Roberge and Dave of Lubbock, TX, Ricky and Dana of Kingsland TX. 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Brownfield Rehabilitation Care Center and their staff and Dr. Kim for their dedicated care. Also BRMC Home Health and the Brownfield Funeral Home for their service.
Memorial services for Ruth will be held at 10 am on Friday, March 24, 2023 at the First Baptist Church Brownfield.
