Sally (nicknamed 'Sunshine Sally') was born June 19, 1933, in Collinsville, TX, to Thomas Clifton ('Buck') and Hazel Irene Utley Buchanan. She attended schools in Slaton, graduating in 1951. She married Robert Louis Becker on September 5, 1951, in Slaton. Together they moved to Flower Grove, TX, where Robert began teaching Vocational Agriculture. They then moved to Loop, TX, for three years before moving on to Brownfield in 1957, where her husband Robert taught school for 33 years. Sally inspired her students for 17 years with her love of sharing the art of reading as the Oak Grove Elementary library aid beginning approximately in 1970 until 1987. She was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Brownfield alongside Robert and her family. Sally's contributions to her community and church were widely appreciated as her bubbly support and presence made a difference in the lives of her students, colleagues and friends. It has been heartwarming to hear of so many who have recognized the positive impact Sally and Robert had on education in Brownfield. Their commitment to teaching and their involvement in the community of Brownfield left a lasting loving legacy.
Sally had been an active member of Beta Sigma Phi social sorority and served as past First Lady of District Governor Becker of Lions Club District 2T2. After Robert's passing in August 2010, Sally married former Slaton High School friend and classmate, Richard Gentry in 2014. Sally's favorite pastimes were traveling (fifth wheeling in the mountains) and dancing with her spouse, sharing and reading books with children, as well as humming and singing around the house.
Sally is survived by two sons, Danny Becker and his wife Louisa of Flower Mound, and Joe Don Becker and his wife Diane of Hurst; four grandchildren, Hannah Danielle Glenney (Justin) of Magnolia, Turner Becker of Austin, Jared Becker of Lubbock, and Jacob Becker of Hurst; brother-in-law, William Becker (Louise) of Slaton and son-in-law, Tommy Baker (Terry) of Lubbock.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Clifton and Hazel Irene Buchanan; two brothers, Jack Buchanan and Jim Buchanan; two sisters, Evazelle Davis and JoAnn Sartain; her daughter, Terry Lea Baker; her first husband, Robert Louis Becker and her second husband, Richard Gentry.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Raider Ranch in Lubbock and Discovery Village in Southlake, Texas. We appreciate the loving care they provided.
