A Celebration of Life Service for Shelby Marion Duncan will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Brownfield Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Brownfield Funeral Home.

Marion was born in Terry County on March 28, 1936, to Ervin Jacob Duncan and Gertrude Drennon Duncan. Marion was the third of four children. He grew up on the farm, helping his family. He attended school at Meadow ISD and was a part of the 1954 graduating class.

Marion was drafted into the U.S. Army in October of 1958 and served until August of 1960. He was called back into service in October of 1961. He served in many capacities and was stationed in Germany. He was a very proud Army Veteran.

Marion was a member of Meadow First United Methodist Church and was a part of the National Quarter Horse Association. He also helped on his Dad's farm and was employed for approximately 38 years as a lineman at General Telephone Co. Marion worked and lived in the Sundown area. He was loved and admired by his fellow employees and customers alike. He was always responsible for doing a dependable job, and everyone knew they could count on him - he was a man of his word.

He chose a place in the country in Sundown to make his home so that he could raise his beloved horses. They were his first love and passion. He spent long hours in the heat and coldest of cold taking care of his "babies." His horses won many shows. Marion owned one from the bloodline of a famous horse at King Ranch. He also provided or sold a horse to the 3-Time World Champion Barrel Racer. He also loved showing his horses and guiding tours for his great-nieces and nephews on a field trip during "Cousin Crash!" We know he has reunited with his horses in heaven.

Marion is preceded in death by both of his parents, Ervin and Gertrude Duncan; brother and sister-in-law, Elvice & Laverne Duncan; sister, Wilmith Duncan; nephew, Shelby Duncan; and family friend, Gerald Thomas.

Marion is survived by Steven Thomas and Michael Thomas, who were like sons to him; sister and brother-in-law, Clara and James Coalson; nephews, Terry Duncan (Rhonda), Dee Coalson (Toni); nieces, Debra Murphree (Wally), Darla Welch (Tracy), Michelle Redding (Michael) and Elizabeth Duncan; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Marion's family would like to thank all of his caregivers at Cottage Village in Brownfield and Interim Hospice Nurses for the loving care they provided to Marion during his time there.

Marion's personality was one where he showed his love for others, therefore developing loving relationships with all who knew him. His sense of humor was loved by all.
