Funeral services for Sylvia Contreras-Mendez will be held at 10 am Friday, November 2, 2018, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Brandon Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Terry County Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.
There will be a family visitation on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Brownfield Funeral Home from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Sylvia entered into glory on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, in Brownfield. She was born on May 18, 1958, in Brownfield to Cipriano and Isabel Contreras. After graduating from Brownfield High School, Sylvia attended New Mexico Jr. College and the University of the Southwest where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Sylvia was a bilingual teacher in Hobbs and Seminole where she worked with multiple age groups from elementary to adult learners. She attended Bethel Assembly in Hobbs, NM. Sylvia married Alfred Mendez on February 4, 1978, in Brownfield. She was a certified Chaplin, girl scout leader, and passionately active in ministry. She and her husband were involved with Outreach Apartment Ministries in Hobbs.
Sylvia was a charismatic woman that loved and was loved by many. The family knows how much she loved people by the love that they have been shown during this difficult time. She always put God first and now is rejoicing with him. She is preceded in death by her father, Cipriano Contreras, nephew, Jay Diaz, grandparents, Jose and Isabel Contreras, and in-laws, Emilio and Jesusa Mendez.
Sylvia is survived by her mother, Isabel Contreras; husband, Alfred Mendez of Hobbs, NM; two daughters, Leticia Castro and husband, Jimmi, of Plainview, Daniella Hughes and husband, Christopher, of Austin; three grandchildren, Emeli, Madison, Katie Castro; five siblings, Rita Contreras, James Contreras, Raquel Lozano, Mario Contreras, Alex Contreras; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
