Virginia passed away Sunday, April 3, 2011 in Brownfield. She was born September 2, 1915 to William Otis and Irene Roy in Nacogdoches, Texas. Virginia graduated from Kirbyville High School in Kirbyville, TX. She married her college sweetheart, James Burnett on May 24, 1941 in Call, Texas. She attended Abilene Christian College and Texas Tech University. She returned home to work for the Navy Distributing Office while her husband was serving in World War II. After James was discharged, he and Virginia ran a dairy farm in Brownfield. While helping her husband with the dairy, she also worked as a Social Worker for the Department of Human Resources for the State of Texas for 23 years and raised three very successful children, Horace, Judy and Gary. Virginia was an active and vital part of the Brownfield Church of Christ. For many years she participated in “Thursday School” at the Church. She is known as “Granny B” and lovingly remembered by many generations of people whose lives she touched. She was also an active participant in the “World Bible School” Program. Virginia, James and Gertrude had over 32, 000 students. Many people have been shown the love of Christ because of her active participation in this program. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a sister and a great granddaughter, Alexis Burnett.

Those left behind to remember her with a smile and a happy tear of remembrance, include her husband of 69 years, James Burnett of Brownfield; 2 sons, Horace and wife Roxanne of Amarillo and Gary and wife Sandy of Ft. Worth; a daughter, Judy Edgar and husband Bill of Brownfield; grandchildren, Tracy Smothermon and husband Mark of Amarillo, Jade Burnett of Aurora, Colo., Robert Burnett and wife Miquela of Combine, Carl Edgar and wife Melissa of Brownfield, Paul Edgar and wife Jennifer of San Antonio and Jason Burnett and wife Colleen of San Marcos; great grandchildren, Ashton Burnett, Adison and Elijah Smothermon, Christian and Celeigh Burnett, Makayla Kinney and Trinity Mitchell, Jillian and William Edgar, Justin and Rylie Burnett; a great-great granddaughter, Marley.

Virginia was a loving person that genuinely cared about others. She would willingly give of her time her love and resources. She will be greatly missed. She would want us to remember to “Love the Lord and each other!”
